Here’s how it breaks down: ✅ Three-Wheeled Isetta: • The original Iso Isetta, developed by Iso SpA in Italy in 1953, came with three wheels. • BMW licensed the design from Iso and made several changes, including to the number of wheels depending on the country. • In the UK, BMW exported a three-wheeled version of the Isetta to benefit from lower taxation and insurance costs, which applied to three-wheeled vehicles at the time. • These cars had two wheels in the rear, spaced closely together, effectively functioning like a single wheel for registration purposes. ✅ Four-Wheeled Isetta: • In most other markets (like Germany and the U.S.), the BMW Isetta came with four wheels—but the rear wheels were set very close together (about 19 inches apart). • This made the rear wheels look nearly like a single unit, helping to maintain a very narrow rear track.
